Why the match log matters more than the tally

Scanning the actual list of past meetings, not just the Win-Draw-Loss count, is where head-to-head data becomes genuinely useful. A record built on three lopsided wins in a row looks completely different from the same win tally spread evenly with several draws mixed in.

Competition context within the log

Not every meeting in a head-to-head record carries equal weight. A cup match is often played with a different lineup or different priorities compared to a league fixture between the same two sides.

Recency matters more than the total sample

The most recent handful of meetings behind this record are doing more work in predicting how these two teams will play next time than a result from several seasons back.

Why we don't blend this into the consensus number directly

Head-to-head history isn't folded into the fixtures board's pre-match consensus percentage, and that's deliberate — historical meetings are a much smaller, noisier sample than a team's recent run of form across all opponents.

Coverage

Head-to-head records are built as fixtures are tracked, so depth varies by rivalry. A shallow log for a less common fixture isn't a gap in coverage so much as an honest reflection of how rarely those two sides have actually played each other.
