Reading the averages

How FDVS reads league statistics — tempo, scoring rates and what they mean before a fixture

Before FDVS reads a single fixture, it's worth knowing what's normal for the league that fixture sits in. A 2-1 scoreline means something different in a high-scoring league than it does in a tighter one. This page is the league-level context that sits underneath every individual match analysis.

Why league averages matter before reading a match

A team's six-axis ratings and a fixture's consensus percentage are both calculated relative to the league they're playing in, not against some universal standard. Knowing the league's tempo first is what makes a single team's numbers make sense in context, rather than in isolation.

What Avg Goals and Avg xG actually measure

Avg Goals is the straightforward per-match scoring average across the whole league, both teams combined. Avg xG runs alongside it as a check on whether that scoring average reflects genuine chance quality or a run of finishing variance. Not every league has real xG data available — where it genuinely doesn't, that column shows "—" rather than a guessed number.

Why home win percentage varies so much by league

Home advantage isn't a fixed constant across football — it shifts with pitch quality, travel distances, crowd intensity, and refereeing tendencies specific to each league. Leagues with tighter, lower-scoring matches tend to show a higher home win percentage, since fewer goals overall means fewer opportunities for an away side to overturn an early home lead.

Scope: popular domestic leagues only

This page deliberately covers popular, curated domestic leagues only — cup competitions, women's and youth competitions, and international/national-team tournaments are excluded, since mixing a domestic league's tempo with a cup run or a qualifiers window would blur what's actually being measured. A league only appears here once there's enough verified match data behind it to produce a genuinely stable average.

From league context to team ratings to fixtures

This page, the team statistics page, and the fixtures board are three views of the same underlying data at three different levels of zoom — league-wide tempo here, individual team ratings one level in, and a specific two-team matchup on the fixtures board itself.
